Cummins · Automatic Home Backup

NEWBURY PARK · VENTURA COUNTY

Automatic home backup—without the portable setup.

This household previously relied on portable backup equipment and manual setup during outages. A permanent natural-gas Cummins system now provides an automatic way to restore power to the connected home circuits after the generator starts. With no automatic load shedding, homeowners still need to be mindful of how many large appliances run at once.

THE TECHNICAL APPROACH

Why this configuration?

Three practical choices shaped this system: automatic startup, realistic power capacity and carefully routed connections.

EVERYDAY CONVENIENCE

Ready for an outage. No cords to set up.

When utility power fails, the standby generator is designed to start automatically and supply the home through the transfer switch. There is no need to roll out portable equipment or connect extension cords for the circuits served by the system. Power returns after the generator starts and the switch transfers—not instantaneously.

AUTOMATIC TRANSFER

Automatic changeover, clear capacity limits

The transfer switch disconnects the home from utility power before connecting generator power. Its 200 A rating describes the switch, not how much power the generator produces. On natural gas, the generator is rated 18 kW; without automatic load shedding, simultaneous use of heavy appliances still needs to stay within that capacity.

THOUGHTFUL INSTALLATION

Carefully routed, with a cleaner exterior

Approximately 50 feet of electrical conduit and natural-gas piping were routed beneath the house to connect the outdoor equipment. Keeping much of the routing below the home helped limit visible exterior runs while maintaining a practical layout for equipment access and future service.
