Kohler · Managed Standby & Electrical Upgrade
SANTA ROSA VALLEY · VENTURA COUNTY
Automatic + managed standby power. A complete electrical infrastructure upgrade.
This was not a generator-only project. The coordinated scope combined a Kohler automatic standby system with replacement 200 A meter-main equipment, a new outdoor distribution load center, an automatic transfer switch, branch-circuit transition and load-management equipment, and whole-house surge protection. Dedicated underground natural gas, HVAC soft starts, a reinforced generator pad and localized exterior restoration completed the infrastructure plan.

THE TECHNICAL APPROACH
Why this configuration?
Dependable backup power takes more than a generator. Here’s how the electrical upgrade, load strategy and outdoor work fit together.
ELECTRICAL INFRASTRUCTURE
One coordinated electrical system
Rather than simply adding a generator, the project updated the home’s 200 A service and distribution equipment and added an automatic switch to transfer power during an outage. Surge protection and organized outdoor controls brought the equipment together in one power path. The home’s 200 A utility-service rating stayed the same.
SIZING & LOAD CONTROL
Sized for the home. Managed for real life.
The home’s calculated demand exceeded the generator’s 24 kW natural-gas output. Rather than assuming everything can run at once, automatic controls can temporarily pause the pool equipment or either A/C system when demand is high. Soft-start devices also help reduce A/C startup surges. The goal is to keep priority loads powered while respecting the generator’s limits.
FUEL & SITE WORK
Care in every connection and finish
A well-planned backup system goes beyond the generator itself. This project’s scope included approximately 100 feet of underground natural-gas piping, a reinforced concrete pad, carefully routed exterior conduit and localized stucco restoration. These details help the equipment fit the property and remain accessible for future service. Gas work and required approvals involve appropriately qualified parties.

During an outage, the Kohler 26RCA feeds the ATS generator input. Priority-based relays manage selected A/C and pool loads; the 200 A utility-service rating does not increase.

The generator takes over automatically.
If utility power fails, the generator starts. Once its power is ready, the automatic transfer switch supplies the backed-up household circuits.

What this means for you: There is a brief interruption during generator startup and transfer. Backup applies to connected circuits, not necessarily every appliance.
How to read this visual: The solid arrows above represent the main electrical power path. The load-management strip below represents separate control decisions, not another power feed.
*The generator's illustrative 24 kW natural-gas model rating and the 200 A ATS transfer rating describe different equipment capabilities. This is a simplified educational diagram, not an as-built wiring or approved one-line drawing; model details and control behavior require final verification.
